Context The P M 2 environment is a joint project between the (École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, France) and the (Université des Sciences et Technologies de Lille, France). We have a number of contacts and collaborations with other research laboratories related to the P M 2 development.     Overview P M 2  is a distributed multithreaded environment designed to efficiently support irregular parallel applications on distributed architectures. P M 2 can manage several hundreds of threads on each available physical processor. The P M 2 interface provides functionalities for the management of this high degree of parallelism and for dynamic load balancing. Distinguishing features of P M 2 include its priority driven scheduling policy, its thread migration mechanisms and its ability to ease the developement of various load balancing policies.     Availability P M 2 is a highly portable and efficient environment and the current software is yet available on a wide range of architectures. The implementation is built on top of two separate software components : Marcel and Madeleine. Marcel is a POSIX-compliant thread package that provides extra-features such as thread migration that are needed by the P M 2 runtime. Marcel is currently available on Pentium, MIPS, ALPHA, Sparc and PowerPC processors. Madeleine is a generic communication interface which is able to fully exploit the low latency and the high bandwidth of high-speed networks such as Myrinet, FDDI or SCI. Madeleine is currently available on top of several communication protocols: VIA, BIP, SBP, SCI, MPI, PVM and TCP.
